Somatic Muscle in the Earthworm

چکیده

Neuromuscular transmission in invertebrates has been studied extensively (see Bullock & Horridge, 1965). However, the neuromuscular junctions in the earthworm have only been studied by Horridge & Robertes (i960). The present experiments were carried out to investigate the transmission in the neuromuscular junctions which could be recorded from the postsynaptic membranes of the longitudinal muscle of the earthworm. Excitatory junction potentials (E.J.P.'S) and miniature excitatory junction potentials (M.E.J.P.'S) could be recorded but they appeared only seldom. In contrast, inhibitory junction potentials (I.J.P.'S) and miniature inhibitory junction potentials (M.IJ.P.'S) were recorded from nearly all the cells in which microelectrodes were inserted. Therefore this paper describes mainly the properties of the M.I.J.P.'S and the I.J.P.'S generated from the longitudinal muscle; the properties of the E.J.P.'S and the M.E.J.P.'S are partly described.

Chloride cotransport in the membrane of earthworm body wall muscles.

The resting membrane potential (V(m)) of isolated somatic longitudinal muscles of the earthworm Lumbricus terrestris was studied by glass microelectrodes. The inhibition of chloride permeability by low pH did not affect V(m) of the muscle fibers in isolated somatic longitudinal muscles of the earthworm Lumbricus terrestris which was -48.7 mV (inside negative) at pH 7.3 and -49.1 at pH 5.6. On t...

Membrane properties of the somatic muscle (obliquely striated muscle) of the earthworm.

An extensive monograph of electrophysiological and morphological studies of the invertebrate nervous system has been written by Bullock & Horridge (1965). According to this monograph much work has been carried out on the nervous system, but electrophysiological studies of the somatic muscle fibres of annelids appear to have been very rare. Horridge & Robertes (i960) studied the relationship bet...
